Rumored Next-Generation Apple TV

Features and Expectations

It’s been over a year and a half since the current Apple TV was released, sparking curiosity about when a new model will debut. This overview recaps the latest rumors about the next-generation Apple TV, highlighting potential new features and expected pricing.

Current Apple TV 4K: A Recap

The current Apple TV 4K, introduced in October 2022, brought several improvements over its 2021 predecessor:

  • Faster A15 Bionic chip
  • Larger 128GB storage option
  • Thinner and lighter design
  • HDR10+ support
  • USB-C port on the Siri Remote
  • Lower $129 starting price (compared to the previous $179)

Upcoming Apple TV Rumors

In January 2023, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that a new Apple TV was slated for release in the first half of 2024:

“Beyond the future smart displays and new speaker, Apple is working on revamping its TV box. A new version with the current design is in the works for the first half of next year with a faster processor, the people said.”

With only one month left in the first half of 2024, it’s uncertain if this timeframe remains accurate. A potential announcement could occur at the WWDC keynote on June 10, although no firm hardware rumors have surfaced for the event.

Historical Release Timeline

Here is a timeline of the last five Apple TV models:

  • Third-generation Apple TV 4K: October 2022
  • Second-generation Apple TV 4K: April 2021
  • First-generation Apple TV 4K: September 2017
  • Apple TV HD: September 2015
  • Third-generation Apple TV: March 2012

Anticipated Features

The next Apple TV is expected to feature a faster processor than the current A15 Bionic chip and may be priced even lower. Notably, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested a starting price under $100:

“Both the second-generation (2010) and third-generation (2012) versions of the Apple TV were priced at $99 in the U.S. at launch, and Apple eventually lowered the price of the third-generation model to $69.”

This pricing strategy would help Apple compete more effectively with budget-friendly streaming devices from Google, Amazon, and Roku.

Potential Design and Functional Enhancements

While no significant design changes have been rumored, there’s speculation about adding a built-in camera to future models. Currently, tvOS 17’s FaceTime app allows video calls using the rear camera on a connected iPhone or iPad. An integrated camera in the Apple TV would eliminate the need for external devices during video calls.

If the WWDC keynote passes without a new Apple TV announcement, the timeline for the next model’s release will remain uncertain. Regardless, the rumored features and potential lower pricing point towards an exciting update that could enhance the Apple TV’s appeal in the competitive streaming device market.
